Educational Activity

Today I talked with 4 classes in Nofim school in Tel-Aviv about this special event that was taking place all over the world. I taught 400 children of 6 elemantary schools in Tel-Aviv focusing on kestrels and barn owls. The children learned about birds, bird migration and conflicts between birds and airplanes. They analyzed pellets of barn owls\' and built nesting boxes for songbirds such as the great tit. We visited the zoological zoo with the students and organised bird watching activities and other great events.

The site is part of the Rift Valley, which is an important passage for bird migration: The public (including regional schools) is invited to take part in the release of 6 rehabilitated raptors (Levant sparrowhawk, Black kite, Steppe buzzard & Marsh harrier) that where injured due to anthropogenic factors while migrating back north. The emphasize is laying on the dangers that human impose to migratory birds in Israel & the Middle East. The release will be covered by main media channels in Israel.

Gordana Pavokovic, MSc, is going to held a lecture on bird migration. We have sent special invitations to elementary and high schools in the area, but also in the local media.

i) -Awareness campaigns on WMBD, wild birds, climate change and African Flyways in schools (primary school, Secondary/High School and University)
ii) -Meeting with an association of poultry farmers to share information on the role of wild birds in the progation of bird flu.
iii) -Search, arrange and distribute handouts related to migratory birds, bird flu, African flyway and climate change
iv) -Press briefing/media coverage/interviews on the role of migratory birds in a changing climate and information on Africa Flyway concept.

Participants meet at the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya Offices Kisumu at 7.00 a.m. Activities for the day will include a birdwalk for school children and members of the public along the shores of Lake Victoria, and thereafter talks and video shows
on migratory birds at the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya offices, Kisumu.

Bird watching in these areas will run parallel. Thereafter, groups shall converge at Isecheno and Buyangu Resource centers for refreshments. At Isecheno a video show on Birds of Prey and a demonstration of the Bird Call- back Radio.

On the occasion of WMBD GOB - Mallorca will organise a birdwatching trip to Boquer Valley to see migratory birds.
