Educational Activity

Parco Natura Viva supports the Life + Reason for Hope project which is trying to reintroduce the Northern Bald Ibis in Europe re-establishing its migration route from their breeding areas in Austria to the wintering area in Tuscany (Italy). On the occasion of the World Migratory Bird Day we will learn many curiosities about this animal and we will play a funny game on migration. Furthermore, we will highlight the issue of pollution caused by plastic, to understand how this damages wildlife, especially birds.

Everyone is welcome to join us for a day of events across California's Central Valley!  We will begin on the western side of Merced County at O'Neill Forebay, part of the Four Rivers Sector of California State Parks.  The next location will be the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge outside of Los Banos.  Early in the afternoon there will be activities at Applegate Park near Beark Creek in the City of Merced.  We will finish the day in the Yosemite Lake area (Merced County Parks), near the University of California Merced.

Ericka Miller DVM, Staff Veterinarian for Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research will focus on this year's theme for World Migratory Bird Day: ‘Be the Solutions to Plastic Pollution,’ by talking about how plastics and other toxins harm birds and other wildlife. Program is in the Visitor Center auditorium. Program sponsored by Friends of Bombay Hook.

This event is open to Central Florida Girl Scout Brownies and Daisies and their younger siblings.

Girls can:

• Meet a Florida waterbird expert and see the equipment he uses to trap and radiotrack cranes
• Use chemistry to test water quality
• Learn names of Florida waterbirds
• Tackle aquatic invaders
• Make cool crafts
• Play games to win prizes
• Earn a fun patch
• Learn to be the solution to plastic pollution!

It's time to do our part to help clean up the planet and help protect our native bird species! Join Ruthven Park National Historic Site for a morning of plastic conservation games and activities to raise awareness about native birds and the effects of plastic pollution. Help clean up the park by joining our walks to clean-up the grounds. Create your own artwork made from recycled plastic. Participate in giant plastic lawn games. Learn about the importance of bird migration first-hand at our Bird Banding Lab. Take part in a tour of the historic Thompson Family Mansion.

WisCorps, Coulee Region Audubon Society, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Geological Survey and the City of La Crosse are hosting a World Migratory Bird Day celebration in Myrick Park and at the Myrick Park Center on Saturday May 4, 2019 from 6:30 am – 12 noon.  This entirely FREE event includes a sunrise birding hike, bird banding demonstration, family-friendly birding walks, River Valley Raptors live raptor presentation and booth, bird-themed crafts and games.

Aside from bird watching, monitoring, and a field trip in the wetland where migratory birds are observed, the event will include: a) clean up drive for birds and sanitation; b) exhibit on bird migration in the community; and c) the conduct of “Dalaw Turo” (Dalaw – to visit; Turo – to teach), alternative approach on biodiversity conservation by using street theatre, environmental games, and lectures.

The event’s purpose and objectives are:

1) provide communication, education and public awareness on migratory bird conservation;

This FREE Community Event is open to the entire community with activities focused on families and kids of all ages, and will be held at Legacy Ranch! Hands-on education activities will be offered between 10 am - 1 pm with topics including:

Spring Nature Celebration at Warner Park Nature Center

Join us as we celebrate the Swallow-Tailed Kite. This species nests in Florida and winters in Brazil. This is a 10,000 mile migratory journey! Meet Scooter our STKI and learn about conservation efforts and what dangers they may endure during their journey. Two years ago, a GPS tracking device was placed on Apopka,one of our rehabilitated Kites. Come out and learn about tracking studies for these birds and find out where Apopka is now.
