As Asia’s world city with the most dynamic citylife, Hong Kong does preserve some truly impressive wildlife and ecology. Some remarkable habitats and species are protected at the outskirt of Hong Kong, Mai Po1. There, WWF-Hong Kong has a dedicated Research and Monitoring Team on site that works on assessing the effectiveness of the management of different habitats which are homes to the thousands of migratory birds refuge in the marshes and mudflats. “Bird count”, “photo recording” and “ringing” are among the works that bring in the knowledge of birds.
The “Friends of Birds” series enables the audiences to closely interact with the core member of the Research & Monitoring Team. The Reserve Officer will reveal in person her interesting day-to-day works, equip them with some basic bird count technique as well as introduce them with the research on bird migration. Afterwards, they will take part in an outdoor field trip and get involved in a bird monitoring survey on site. Thus, be able to understand more about the importance of ecological monitoring to the conservation of bird species, in particular the threatened species such as the Black-faced spoonbill.
