Statement by Ms. Astrid Schonmaker on World Migratory Bird Day 2024

This year’s theme “Protect Insects, Protect Birds” illustrates one of the wonders of nature: biological diversity at work. Different species interact in fascinating ways to sustain life on Earth. Without insects, the awe-inspiring journeys of migratory birds would not be possible. By feeding on insects along their flyways, migratory birds provide free pest control, pollinate plants and distribute seeds for our food, health and wellbeing. Biodiversity is an indivisible whole, and so is the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and its 23 targets. Like a migratory bird, the Conference of the Parties to the CBD is now on its way to Colombia to spread hope for a sustainable future under the theme of “peace with nature”.
