The celebration of World Migratory Bird Day on Saturday 14 October 2023 was attended by more than 40 people consisting of students, bird watchers and local communities.
Using 2 vessels, monitoring activities were conducted in the waters of Jakarta Bay. Within Jakarta Bay, which covers an area of 514 square kilometres, the team managed to collect data over a distance of 41.5 kilometres.
We recorded 446 individuals of 10 seabird species, such as Christmas Frigatebird (Fregata andrewsi), Great Frigatebird (Fregata minor), Lesser Frigatebird (Fregata ariel), Greater-crested Tern (Thalasseus bergii), Lesser-crested Tern (Thalasseus bengalensis), Black-naped Tern (Sterna sumatrana), White-winged Tern (Chlidonias leucopterus), Aleutian Tern (Onychoprion aleuticus), Swinhoe's Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates monorhis) and Little black cormorant (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris).
Three seabird species are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, namely the Christmas Frigatebird and Aleutian Tern, which are listed as vulnerable, and the Swinhoe's Storm-Petrel, which is listed as critically endangered.
In addition to monitoring activities, the team also collected data on threats. This was done by interviewing fishermen around Jakarta Bay. The team provided posters on seabird conservation in Jakarta Bay following the interviews.
This activity is in collaboration with the Nectarinia Birdwatching Group from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, in partnership with the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership and World Migratory Bird Day.
