World Migratory Bird Day in Gulf of Mottama, Myanmar

The Gulf of Mottama is a Ramsar site in Myanmar and home to a diverse range of species, including up to 150,000 migratory waterbirds during the non-breeding season. The local community's involvement in conservation efforts is crucial for the long-term success of conservation programs and the sustainability of the wetlands and species that depend on them. To raise awareness about the conservation of wetlands and migratory waterbirds, numerous initiatives have been implemented over the years, including the establishment of local conservation groups, educational talks, and awareness-raising signboards. The younger generation is the main stakeholder in these efforts, making it essential to educate them about conservation from an early age. Traditional practices and knowledge of indigenous people should also be considered in finding sustainable solutions for migratory birds. During the first World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) of 2023, a WMBD seminar will be held in the monastery of Koe Tae Su village, Bilin Township, Mon State. The seminar aims to facilitate an intergenerational dialogue that explores the complex interplay between livelihoods, wetlands, and migratory birds, and generates ideas for promoting sustainable practices. Invited resource people will give presentations on the importance of wetlands, migratory birds, wetland restoration and challenges, bird watching, and ecotourism. Group discussions will be arranged to develop ideas to reduce threats to wetlands and migratory birds. The main objective of the seminar is to promote the awareness of the local community and to develop measures to reduce the impacts on the mudflat area of the Gulf of Mottama and migratory waterbirds. The event will use visual presentations, vinyl posters, and distribute T-shirts with the theme of WMBD 2022.
