World Migratory Bird Day celebration in Jamaica was held on Friday, November 15, 2019 at the Portland Bight Discovery Centre located in Salt River, Clarendon. Forty-six (46) participants from nine (9) schools were in attendance (see Table 1). The day started with registration at 9:00 a.m; and progressed into a lively and interactive keynote address/discussion session lead by Mr. D. Brandon Hay, Science Officer: “Migratory Birds – Travellers of the World” which focused on the migratory birds, threats faced (with special mention on plastics/micro plastics), and the value of Portland Bight ecosystem. This was followed by a bird scavenger hunt; done during the tour of the wetlands and yard of the Portland Bight Discovery Centre; and a creativity session in which the participants were engaged in making birdfeeders, and a performance art piece of their choice all reflecting the theme: “Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution!” . A colourful showcase of the birdfeeders made by students was put on display; followed by entertaining and educational performances of their original creative pieces that included dub poetry and/ song; this was followed by prize-giving; and the day ended after the guided boat ride through the mangroves. Points scored on the scavenger hunt; birdfeeder(s) made; and performance art piece created and performed, were tallied; and the school with the highest total awarded first prize. First, Second and Third places were awarded to: Mitchell Town Primary and Infant School; Rose Hill Primary and Infant School; and Alley Primary School, respectively. The Caribbean Coastal Area Management (C-CAM) Foundation prepared and set up a display that showcased migratory birds, wetland birds, flora and fauna of Portland Bight Protected Area, and programmes/activities of C-CAM.
