The Story Behind Our World Migratory Bird Day 2017 Poster

Bonn, 7 March 2017 – Ferney Manrique Aragon, a dedicated Colombian UN Online Volunteer based in China, used his graphic design skills to produce our stunning new World Migratory Bird Day 2017 (WMBD 2017) Poster!

The UNV Online Volunteering service mobilizes talented individuals to support UN initiatives for the benefit of mankind. In the words of Ferney, “I’ve taken the opportunity to use part of my spare time in the production of graphic design for organizations which are working for the common benefit of humankind.” We laud this benevolent spirit of collaboration with the international community and are extremely pleased with his beautifully designed poster.

In record-breaking time, our volunteer designer created a series of different templates along this year’s theme of ‘Their Future is Our Future: A Healthy Planet for Migratory Birds and People.’ The UN Environment CMS/AEWA communications team discussed the different versions, which included origami and futuristic elements. The team decided upon a final draft that integrated traditional Australian aboriginal, Central American Kuna, and Native American art forms.

The traditional bird paintings with colourful patterns symbolize the link between humans and nature, especially because of the important relationship between native people and the environment. Furthermore, the diagonal flying movement of the bird shows the different stages of species migration. The poster is also in line with this year’s WMBD theme and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (a series of goals for the kind of future we want for 2030). We must ensure a future for migratory birds if we also cherish a future for humanity and are very proud of this year’s striking WMBD poster that will help raise awareness to achieve these goals.
