Rocky Point Bird Observatory (RPBO) is celebrating their 3rd annual Victoria Bird Week this spring with lots of educational and engaging activities online and throughout the community!
Victoria Bird Week started in 2021 as an online event encouraging people around Victoria and beyond to take part in a variety of activities and learn about the threats facing birds, and the importance of taking action against the loss of bird biodiversity. This week-long event takes place as spring bird migration is ramping up and the weather is warming, and it is a great way for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn more about RPBO and bird conservation.
The week will start on World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD). Rocky Point Bird Observatory, partnering with Victoria Natural History Society and others, has hosted a World Migratory Bird Day event each year since 2010.
For this year’s WMBD on Saturday, May 13th (location to be confirmed) we are excited to be planning a day full of fun, fresh air and learning, including:
- An “Early Bird” guided bird walk in the morning at 7:00am
- Bird banding demonstrations by our trained volunteers
- A variety of educational booths from partner organizations
- Talks (and visits with beautiful birds of prey from the Pacific Northwest Raptor Sanctuary)
From Sunday, May 14th to Friday, May 19th, there will be a variety of online and in-person events that RPBO hosts such as:
- Guided bird walks around the CRD (no experience necessary!)
- Zoom presentations by local experts on topics like Hummingbirds, Migratory Bird Sanctuaries, Bird Parenting, and more!
- Family-friendly activities to explore your local parks
- A keynote presentation that you won’t want to miss
