The Lions Bay Bird Friendly team was recently formed to educate the community of Lions Bay about how to protect our birds, their habitat and food sources. We are hoping to achieve Bird Friendly City status (for small towns) from Nature Canada. Our event will comprise the following:
- A community outreach and education exhibition about being Bird Friendly: this will cover a number of topics, since this is our first year
- Two fun sessions for kids: one in which they will make bird houses (nesting boxes) while learning about birds and another in which they will learn to identify a few local birds while colouring in
- A walk for all age groups led by our local hiking group to view the Bald Eagles' nest closeby
- Attendees will also learn about the importance of indigenous plantings from our Native Plant Garden team, learn about biodiversity from the Howe Sound Regional Biosphere Region team (recognised by UNESCO), and learn about Bear Smart backyard bird feeders (we are a designated Bear Smart community).
- We hope to encourage residents to attend by also offering refreshments and burgers courtesy of two other volunteer groups in the village
