Ventotene Island is a very important site for birdlife and migration. Thanks to its geographical position, in fact, it represents the first stop over site for many species that seasonally make enormous movements between the African continent and Europe.
In this period Ventotene with its cultivated fields and its plants typical of the Mediterranean environment welcomes the so-called "long-range migrants", all the species of birds that spend the winter in the areas south of the Sahara. All these species, after crossing two large ecological barriers (Sahara and Mediterranean), stop on the island in search of shelter and foraging.
The rural life and the relationship with the migratory birds has always been strongly rooted in the life of every islander. Over time, hunting and the capture of small passerines have been replaced by research projects, monitoring and interest by birders, engaging the local community itself.
