Coastal International Cleaning is a beach cleaning event created and convened by Ocean Conservancy, a US civil organization committed to finding solutions to the threats facing our oceans. This global coastal clean-up movement began more than 30 years ago when different communities came together to collect and document the trash that was lost along the coastline to fight for the cleanup of these ecosystems.
Currently, more than 100 countries participating in this movement and only in Ensenada there are more than 50 groups, civil associations, companies, educational institutions and municipal, civil and federal agencies involved. Although our experience in the cleaning of active beaches in 2017 and is identified in different parts of our city, it was not until 2018 that our organization joined the Coastal International Cleaning coalition to organize simultaneous cleaning days with the idea of join forces and achieve greater national impact, as well as protect the biodiversity that abounds in the region.
This year, Terra Peninsular, A.C. and Pacifica in Ensenada Bay is located on the local front of the International Coastal Cleanup corresponding to 1 kilometer from the municipal beach. The event will be held at Playa Pacifica de Todos Santos Bay in Ensenada, Baja California in collaboration with volunteers and beach users on Saturday, September 21 from 9:00 a.m. at 1:00 p.m.
Todos Santos Bay is located in Ensenada, Baja California and is a place of great importance for migratory shorebirds. In 2017, it was considered number 99 of the Hemispheric Bird Network. These birds feed, rest and recharge energy before continuing their migration route along the Pacific. However, there is little information about this site and Bahía de Todos Santos is affected daily by human disturbance, pollution, habitat loss and climate change.
Through this coastal cleaning project we seek to involve the local population in the care of this shorebird habitat and a site that is also used by them to enjoy the beach. We hope to make communities aware of the impact of their support to reduce pollution in the area and show that with their collaboration it is possible to preserve a space of international importance.
