Celebration of World Migratory Bird Day at Technopole de Dakar

Celebration of World Migratory Bird Day: Protect the Dakar Technopole (migratory bird habitat) from the threat of plastic and pollution.

The United Nations Information Centre in Dakar (UNIC Dakar), the Embassy of the Netherlands in Senegal, the Wadden Sea Flyway Initiative, Birdlife International, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Town Planning, Housing and Public Hygiene, the NGO Nature-Community-Development (NCD), the Town Hall of Pikine and students from Dakar and surrounding schools, celebrated World Migratory Bird Day on 11 May 2019 at the Dakar Technopole. This place, located in the « Niayes area », which has survived human construction and housing, has just been erected by the State of Senegal as an urban nature reserve by Decree No. 2019/748 of 29 March 2019. It is, in the heart of the city, a habitat for migratory birds and an exceptional mangrove site.

The day was marked by a bird watching session and a collection of plastic waste. These actions, which were widely covered by the media, made it possible to raise awareness both among the actors present on the spot and among a very large public in order to arouse interest in the preservation of the Dakar Technopole and its sustainability.
