Following the great success of last year, the "Corale San Rocco" choir of Bologna has generously offered to give a second benefit concert in Bonn, in support of the World Migratory Bird Day campaign and the conservation of migratory birds. The new element this year is the participation of the Choir of the Deutsche Welle, a multicultural ensemble that has entertained the public- not only of Bonn - for 20 years with its variety of musical styles and languages. The concert programme will therefore will therefore comprise a medley of lyric and other songs of various genres and tongues. The event builds a bridge between the song of incoming migratory birds announcing the arrival of spring and singing as an expression of human emotions. The concert also aims to celebrate the phenomenon of animal migration that, like music, transcends borders and promotes exchanges between different peoples and cultures.
All proceeds from the concert, donations from sponsors and participants in the concert will be given to a project in support of the White-winged Flufftail (Sarothrura ayresi).
This White-winged Flufftail has been recently upgraded to ‘Critically Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List as the adult population is estimated at less than 250 individuals restricted to Ethiopia and South Africa. A joint CMS/AEWA Action Plan was adopted by the CMS Conference of the Parties in 2008. In this context, a project aimed at reducing and reversing habitat loss and degradation, human disturbance and nest loss, and which will carry out surveys in search of new breeding sites and raise the awareness of local communities, was sponsored by the AEWA Small Grants Fund in Ethiopia. The project is now coming to an end and additional funding would be used to continue the habitat conservation and survey work in Ethiopia building on the outcomes of the current project.
The concert will take place in the "Evangelische Kreuzkirche" on Saturday, 10 May. The Mayor of Bonn, Jürgen Mr. Nimptsch, is supporting the event. The concert will be opened by the Executive Secretary of the Convention.
