Statement by Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili on World Migratory Bird Day 2024

Zurab Pololikashvili
Secretary General of UN Tourism

Dear friends and esteemed partners,

As we prepare to celebrate the World Migratory Bird Day on October 12, I am honored to lend my voice to this vital occasion. This year’s theme, “Protect insects, protect birds,” highlights a crucial aspect of our ecosystems—one that connects the beauty and vitality of migratory birds with the health of the environments they traverse.

Migratory birds are remarkable travelers, embarking on epic journeys across continents. Their survival depends not only on the availability of suitable resting spots but also on the well-being of the ecosystems that support them. Insects, often overlooked in their significance, play a critical role in these ecosystems, serving as essential food sources for birds. Our understanding of the intricate relationships within nature reveals that the conservation of one species invariably impacts others.

The urgency of this message cannot be overstated. With habitat loss, climate change, and pollution placing substantial pressures on both bird and insect populations, it is vital that we rally together to advocate for effective conservation strategies. By ensuring a thriving population of insects, we support the diverse ecosystems that help migratory birds navigate their routes, breed, and nourish their young.

At UN Tourism, we recognize that tourism and conservation can—and must—go hand in hand. The transformative shift occurring within the global tourism industry acknowledges the vital importance of sustainability in fostering economic growth, cultural preservation, and environmental protection. Sustainable tourism practices encourage a deep respect for natural habitats and the diverse species that inhabit them. By promoting responsible travel and safeguarding the environments that migratory birds and insects rely upon, we can foster a harmonious balance that ensures the survival of these species for generations to come.

As we observe this day, let us unite in our efforts to promote sustainable practices that protect our natural habitats. Let us work tirelessly to preserve our precious ecosystems, so that future generations inherit a world abundant in biodiversity. Together, we can make a difference by safeguarding insects, protecting birds, and ensuring a sustainable future for our shared environment.

Thank you for your dedication and commitment to this noble cause.

With sincere hope and commitment,

Zurab Pololikashvili
