Shorebird Surveys and Identification Training in Indonesia

Shorebird surveys and identification training in Indonesia
Phase 2: Sumatra

Background
In 2005, Wetlands International – Indonesia Programme has received a funding to carry out a training programme on Shorebirds Surveys. The training has been implemented successfully in 3 different provinces in Java, of which some 30 people, including 2 participants from Malaysia were participated. The training has achieved its primary objective on improving the capacity of paticipants to identify and carry out simple shorebird surveys. In addition, the training was able to develop a networking of shorebird watchers, of which the information sharing could be made possible.

Following on to the major achievement of the previous training, this proposed programme is meant to enlarge the dispersion of knowledge as well as development of related networking in Sumatra. At the same time, as there is limitation of participants, the programme will also include a public lecture on shorebirds conservation programme in Asia Pasific, targeted to students, birdwatching club members as well as other nature lovers club members at large.

OBJECTIVES

1. To continue training in order to develop shorebird skills training capability in Indonesia;
2. To develop a networking among shorebirds watchers in Sumatra; and
3. To identify potential new sites for the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Shorebird Site Network.

EXPECTED OUTPUTS
1. A report to Wetlands International – Oceania and Environment Australia on the results of shorebird surveys, training activities and meetings conducted, with recommendations for shorebird management and further work required in Indonesia;
2. Increased capacity for shorebird skills training within Sumatra - Indonesia;
