Protect insects, protect birds #WMBD2024

PRESS RELEASE - UN Report: Insect Population Decline Threatens Migratory Birds

On the second annual commemoration of World Migratory Bird Day 2024 on 12 October, the international campaign, organized by a network of global partners, calls for urgent and sustained action to protect both migratory birds and the insects they depend on for survival. This year’s theme, “Protect Insects, Protect Birds”, emphasizes the critical role insects play in the lifecycle of many migratory birds and draws attention to the alarming global decline in insect populations.

The Interconnected Journey: Birds, Insects, and the Battle for Biodiversity

The Amur Falcon (Falco amurensis), a small but extraordinary bird of the raptor family, proves its resilience each year by migrating more than 30 000 kilometres. It undertakes the longest known transoceanic migration of any raptor species, with a non-stop flight over open water for several days. From May to June each year, hundreds of thousands of Amur Falcons arrive in Eastern and Central Asia to raise their young near the Amur River, to which they owe their name.

As we prepare to celebrate the World Migratory Bird Day on October 12, I am honored to lend my voice to this vital occasion. This year’s theme, “Protect insects, protect birds,” highlights a crucial aspect of our ecosystems—one that connects the beauty and vitality of migratory birds with the health of the environments they traverse.

Statement by Mr. Mikaël Poutiers, Bern Convention

The celebration of the World Migratory Bird Day on 12 October 2024 emphasises the critical role insects play in the survival of migratory bird species. These birds rely on the abundance of insects, as one of their primary food sources, to sustain their energy needs, especially during breeding and migration periods.
